#2 Colette

This story is creepy. The description about the hand during the electric jolt and the reaction to the passing car is the creepiest part, thanks for the detail of the hand. But I like it because it uses a superficial description about the hand to represent the marriage of this couple.
I think Colette used symbolism in this story. He used the view of the wife to the hand to represent their marriage live.  In the story, the lady married a widowed man after three months they first met. She liked everything she saw on him. That is the purpose of marrying her husband. But after seeing the jolt and cramp she started a new look on her feelings to her husband. Instead of writing her life and feeling directly, Colette used the ways she looked at her husband as a symbolic. She married the guy for his look at first. Then after they have been through something in their lives, troubles, or arguments, she would start get tired of this marriage because there is no true love here. But I like the ending too. She kissed her husband’s hand again, despite her feeling. This is a symbolic of her deciding staying in the marriage and trying to get over the challenges in their live with her husband.
I don’t think in such a short time, she would have strong feelings (love) about her husband. In another way, part of the reasons that her husband married her may be covering his sadness of losing his ex-wife. But why did she choose to stay along her husband and start a real marriage live?

  1. I think she chose to stay with her husband was because of societal pressures. Perhaps she thinks being divorced and remarrying is a worse reputation/fate than being married to a man she knows absolutely nothing about.

  2. I believe that Colette is trying to say that the reason why the wife stayed wed to her husband is to show that after a while, marrige becomes no longer about love, but more about having to deal with the person's faults and by kissing his hand, shows that he is only there to fill her sexual desires now. ( sorry if that came out crude.)

  3. I think that she really had no choice but to stay married to him, when she finally realized that she didn't love him its too hard for her to leave, because she married him in hope of escaping her previous life "with the pink curtains" now she has a new life and although she doesn't like it, she is afraid of leaving.

  4. I think she chose to stay with her husband because in that time period divorce was all bad. She made the decision to marry and loss her childhood by doing it. I think that she might have realized that she was growing up too fast and that gave her the fear of her husband. She thought of it as a romantic story like a fair tale in the beginning showing her state of mind as still a child. When she realized it was time to grow up it became a horror story.

  5. The reason why she chose to stay with her husband because she's the one who cause her trouble, so why turn back. In my traditional, once you get marry, you cannot go back and live with your parents like nothing has happened. It's not the same any more because if you want to act like a young teenager, you are no longer a young teenager; you're a women that use to have a husband. Not only one marry couple have good and bad relationship, everybody does.
